Restoration Plans
Locomotive #30:
What is being done:
Locomotive #30 will be restored to operational condition for use on the
Georgetown Loop Railroad. It is currently at Uhrich Locomotive Works. After Uhrich
completes work restoring C&S #9, they will begin work on #30.
As of August, 2004, Locomotive #30 has been in Strasburg, Colorado, under the
care of Uhrich Locomotive Works.
Mechanical Evaluation:
Ulrich Locomotive Works has completed its evaluation of Colorado &
Northwestern locomotive #30. The report, which was sent to the City
of Boulder on October 28, indicates that the locomotive will require
extensive work but can be returned to operating condition. Ulrich
estimates that restoring #30 to operating condition will cost
$255,000.00, and that the work will take 24-36 months to complete.
The Colorado Historical Society will now decide if it wishes to go
forward with the operational restoration and then use #30 on the
Georgetown Loop. If not, the locomotive will be cosmetically
restored and return to Boulder.
The evaluation showed that while #30’s boiler is in good overall
condition, its frame and running gear are in much worse condition
than previously thought. The main project for the boiler will be
replacing the entire firebox, as there are numerous weld repairs on
the side and door sheets as well as thin spots. Numerous cracks were
found on #30’s frame, most likely from its days of bucking
snow out of Leadville on the Colorado & Southern, and Ulrich
plans to remove the boiler from the frame to complete repairs to the
frame. Numerous problems with the spring rigging, including an
incorrectly sized spring, were also uncovered as well as worn and
broken grease cellars, which lubricate the axles. The drive axles
looked to be OK, with only minor scoring.
#30's Tender:
The tender has been fully restored and is currently at Uhrich Locomotive Works
along with #30.
Coach #280:
Coach 280 has been fully restored and is currently at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado.
Caboose #04990:
Caboose #04990 is slowly being restored in the park by volunteer efforts. This summer a grant from the state
historical society funded a new roof, and volunteers have installed a new roof
walk and some other minor repairs.
Other work in the future will include:
- Complete work from SHF grant (doors & cupola windows)
- Repair bolsters and install center truss rods and coupler pockets
- Install brake wheels & staffs
- Install couplers
- Clean interior
- Other mechanical work if time permits

#30's tender:
A newly cast journal box is machined for #30's tender. The journal boxes on the rear truck of the
tender were beyond repair, (They had already been repaired many times and resembled a
jigsaw puzzle) so Uhrich cast new ones. |

restoration, the tank is receiving a new bottom and internal bracing. |
